چکیده
Microbial biofilms form on oral surfaces. These biofilms usually exist in dynamic equilibria with host defenses and are compatible with maintenance of the integrity of the target tissues. Disease occurs when the composition and the metabolic activities of complex communities in biofilms are perturbed. These ecologically driven changes in oral biofilms result in increases in the proportions of pathogenic micro-organisms, which possess enzymatic and structural determinants that may render them more virulent than organisms associated with oral health. This brief review focuses on key environmental influences, and genetic and physiologic aspects of bacteria associated with the formation of dental caries, and attempts to identify some areas of oral microbiology in which interdisciplinary efforts will be essential for dissection of the molecular events controlling the development and persistence of pathogenic plaques. The focus is on strategies to enhance fundamental knowledge of oral biofilm composition, structure, and activities, with the rationale that broadly effective therapeutic strategies targeted at plaque physiology, or at biofilm development and persistence, can arise from such knowledge.

Introduction: Patients receiving orthodontic treatment get some alterations in their oral cavity environment such as an increase in the levels of microorganism in oral cavity and dental biofilms. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate as well as to compare the colonization of mutans streptococci in different parts of removable orthodontic appliances. Methods: In this descriptive analytic stu...

Background and aim: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a relapsing disease with typical ulcers that involve the oral mucosa. The objective of this study was to determine the microbial flora and pH of mouth in patients during and between disease relapse.Materials and Methods: Patients were selected by simple non-random sampling. Totally 28 patients were included in this st...

Dental caries is the most common chronic disease which involve the civilized humankind and is designated as the “disease of the civilization”. Oral Streptococci such as S. sanguis, S. salivarius and S. mutans have a very important role to play in the process of plaque formation. In order to inhibit and control caries process, the growth of such Streptococci must be reined. The purpose of this s...

Introduction: However human oral cavity consist a mass of microorganisms, some alteration such as application the complete removable denture with poor oral hygiene in edentulous patients may cause overgrowth of several opportunistic microorganisms resulted denture stomatitis. The aim of present study was to compare the dominant oral micro-flora between edentulous denture users with dentate elde...
متن کاملRole of oral streptococci in the pH-dependent carious dentin
the extent to which oral streptococci or lactic acid producing bacteria are able to regulate pH value, especially at low pH values associated with dentinal carious activity using a PCR method. One millimeter-thick sections were sliced from 24 extracted carious human molars. The pH values on the tooth sections were evaluated using a pH-imaging microscope. A dentin sample (1×1×1mm) was prepared f...
متن کاملPrevalence of the amylase-binding protein A gene (abpA) in oral streptococci.
Salivary amylase binds specifically to a number of oral streptococcal species. This interaction may play an important role in dental plaque formation. Recently, a 585-bp gene was cloned and sequenced from Streptococcus gordonii Challis encoding a 20.5-kDa amylase-binding protein (AbpA). The goal of this study was to determine if related genes are present in other species of oral streptococci. B...
